Meet Threebee, the
Internet Enabled Car...

Threebee Internet Car is an "ego project" based on a collection of features we've built into other systems. An ego project is roughly defined as "we're doing it because we can / we like to show off our skills" so it's going to be a work in progress forever!

Threebee

Background

Since the late 1990's vehicles come standard with an OBD-2 diagnostics port which gives technical staff access to the inner workings of the vehicles engine and management system. The Threebee project taps into this diagnostic port to interpret, process and display the key engine and performance parameters bouncing around on the internal Controller Area Network (CANBUS) of the car.

Technical Overview

Since the late 1990's vehicles come standard with an OBD-2 diagnostics port which gives technical staff access to the inner workings of the vehicles engine and management system. The Threebee project taps into this diagnostic port to interpret, process and display the key engine and performance parameters bouncing around on the internal Controller Area Network (CANBUS) of the car.

Threebee's internal electronic system will be built using a collection of "off the shelf" Arduino/Raspberry pi microcontrollers and some proprietory electronics. Threebee will contain an interface to the OBD-2 port coupled to an LCD touch screen for easy data display and the human interface controls.

Data collected on the CANBUS will find it's way to our cloud server via onboard LTE modem and selected data made available on the page, just because it's really interesting, and, because we can! :)

As it's a work in progress we'll be making occasional updates once milestones are reached. Keep an eye on the page for future updates...

Project Status

01 July 2018

Still waiting impatiently for our OBD-2 port and CANBUS connectors to arrive from banggood.com. Apparently stuck in customs and since they're kind of critical to the whole project, it's a case of hurry up and wait...

20 June 2018

LCD Touch screen evaluated, GPS Chip sourced and Raspberry Pi Zero-W chosen for display module. A couple of really kick ass 3D printed parts will be needed to mount it to the dash

25 May 2018

OBD-2 port, Stearing wheel mounted switches and CANBUS connectors ordered from banggood.com.

We'll draw this nice and pretty in CAD later! :)
